This is what my grandad always used to tell me to explain why dogs always sniff each others' butts.

"There was this big party, see, and all the dogs were invited. They were trying to keep it nice and clean and you know how dogs are, so the one request was that every dog take off his butt-hole and hang it up. And they all did. It was a lovely party and everybody was having a good time, eating and drinking and dancing. Until somebody yelled "FIRE!"

And of course, everybody started to panic, running out the door and grabbing a butthole on the way out 'cause a dog can't get along without a butt-hole, you know!

So ever since that party, all the dogs have been smelling each other's butts, trying to find their own.

There's a musical version of this story, called "The Dogs' Party," sung to the tune of the hymn, "The Church's One Foundation." Love it! :)

More or less the version I've heard:

I think there's a couple unnecessary line repeats, possibly typos. Enjoy!

To snort cappuchino through one's nose is a truly unpleasant experience. Luckily, I'm drinking latté. It snorts easier.

*giggle* He had an answer for everything....not always factural or correct but damned entertaining.

He also had an explanation as to why the bulls on either side of the road were bellowing at one another...

Well, it's an aural story, really, and must be heard to have the best effect. But imagine the sound of one bull bawling on his side of the fence, a road, and then another field on the other side of that road with another unhappy bull behind the fence of that yard.

The one yells to the other, "MMMMMMMyyy balls are bigger than your's arrrre!"
And the other one yells back, "NNNNoooo they're nnnnnot, MMMMMMine are biggerrrrrr!

And so the arguement goes on...

That story reminds me of the stories that my grandpa told me. You never knew if he was telling the truth or pulling your leg. I miss him a lot...but I know I'll see him again one day.

In a nicely serendipitous happenstance, one of Google's links in my gmail today was Ask Yahoo: Why do dogs sniff each other? (http://ask.yahoo.com/20060302.html)

There's a new children's picture book out with this story... though of course the dogs are all missing their own *tails* only... Oh, and it was the cat's fault, of course :-)
